There’s more competitive horse racing action this weekend at Newbury for the Coral Winter Carnival.
The Coral Gold Cup is the feature contest, which has attracted an excellent 24-runner field, including Cheltenham Festival winner Myretown for Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore.

FRIDAY 12:45 – 2 PT WIN | MAMBONUMBERFIVE
Mambonumberfive’s winning chase debut was very pleasing and you should always take note when Ben Pauling sends a lightly-raced hurdler over fences. He will only improve for that outing and while he is in a deeper race here, he should take a bit of beating if he continues to improve. Of his rivals, Palacio is a threat if he settles and Captain Bellamy too, if he has race fitness on his side. Both of which are not guaranteed. Perhaps Bluey could present the biggest danger to the selection, but he’s opposable off a career-high mark.
FRIDAY 13:50 – 2PT WIN | WENDIGO
I have been back and fourth between Wendigo and Regent’s Stroll since the entries came out, but I am siding with the in-form Jamie Snowden team. Wendigo should have won on chase debut, just being caught by Wade Out, who has franked the form since. Don’t forget his fifth in the Albert Bartlett last year, which was a remarkable effort considering he was badly hampered at a crucial time. I think Regent’s Stroll may be a better horse down the line, but with a lot of Paul Nicholls’ needing the run, now may be the perfect time to take him on.
FRIDAY 15:00 – 2 PT WIN | IMPOSE TOI
Strong Leader won the Long Distance Hurdle last year, but it was harder work than it should have been, and in a stronger race this year, I will be looking elsewhere. Impose Toi is very much the new kid on the block in the staying division and looked better than ever when winning a nice pot 20 days ago. He often tanks through his races and this trip may showcase the level of ability this horse possesses. I think stablemate Doddiethegreat is the biggest threat, who has shown strong form over this trip.
SATURDAY 14:55 – 1 PT EW | THE CHANGING MAN
It feels like Joe Tizzard is winning everything in recent weeks and he can claim this week’s Coral Gold Cup feature with The Changing Man. He’s a model of consistency nearly every time he steps on the track, finishing second in valuable handicaps at Ascot and Newcastle, before another runners-up effort in the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival. He had a good comeback run last month in another valuable contest and everything suggests a big run could be on the cards.
