Scottish Grand National: The Key Contenders

Kim Roque – A horse that has proven costly to follow for win purposes, but has often gives his running and probably produced his best at Leopardstown in the Dublin Racing Festival. Fourth in the Cheltenham Festival behind Ask Brewster in the Kim Muir Handicap Chase, but he gives the impression he may have more potential than the latter. This extreme stamina test could play to his strengths and he will certainly be popular in the market.

King Of Answers – Ran a blinder in the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival when finishing second. It paid to be on the front end that day, and the winner had first run, but I’d fancy him to reverse form if they met again. He was ridden as if stamina was a slight question, but based on that effort, an extra two furlongs shouldn’t be an issue. One thing to bear in mind is that Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore haven’t fired at their usual high standards this year, so he might be one to avoid if his price gets too short.

Ask Brewster – Won the Kim Muir Handicap Chase at the Festival, finishing 8 lengths ahead of Kim Roque. He battled gamely after being headed by Road To Home, but a 7lb rise makes matters difficult, as he looked like he was all out to score in March. Nevertheless, he is unexposed over marathon trips and was progressive this time last year, winning three times in a row – twice at Chepstow and once at Cheltenham.

Road To Home – This is Willie Mullins’ only runner, having won this contest for the previous two years. Likely to not be as classy as previous scorers Macdermott and Captain Cody, there is still little between him and Ask Brewster based on their Cheltenham encounter. His best efforts appear on an easier surface, so any drying ground would be a bonus – and he is another that tackles this unique stamina test for the first time. Respected, albeit he doesn’t have a battalion of stablemates joining him, as in previous years.

Montregard – Very progressive and has taken his form to a new level this season, resulting in his overall rating going from 116 to 132. The most impressive of these victories came at Ascot last time out, beating a strong field in which the form has been handsomely franked since with the third win. He performed with credit when the Lacey stable were struggling earlier in the year, suggesting there could be more improvement left in him. Interesting.

VERDICT:

  1. King Of Answers – 6/1
  2. Montregard -10/1
  3. Kim Roque – 5/1
