Shamrock Rovers vs St Patrick’s Athletic – Irish Premier Division 2026 Match Preview

by Danny

Friday night sees the first edition of a famous Dublin derby as reigning champions Shamrock Rovers welcome St Patrick’s Athletic to the Tallaght Stadium.

This will be the first game of Shamrock’s Irish Premier Division season after last week’s scheduled contest at Shelbourne was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

Hopefully the weather in the Irish capital plays ball on Friday, because games between these two teams always deliver entertainment and drama!

NetBet is now the proud Responsible Gambling partner of Shamrock Rovers, and you will see our logo brandished across their shirt sleeves throughout the campaign.

And to celebrate the start of the partnership, we have previewed the latest edition of Shamrock Rovers vs St Patrick’s Athletic in full, picking out some match betting tips based on our Irish Premier Division odds.

Shamrock Rovers vs St Patrick’s Athletic Preview

Last season, Shamrock extended their record as the most successful club in Irish Premier Division history by lifting the trophy for the 10th time.

It was yet another awesome campaign from Stephen Bradley’s men, who finished three points ahead of Derry City.

And the objective for this season is to retain the title, a journey beginning with a tricky assignment against St Pat’s – who finished fifth last term.

Shamrock were the dominant force in this fixture during the 2025 campaign, winning both matches at home without conceding (1-0 in March and 4-0 in May).

However, St Pat’s fared far better on home soil, following up a 2-2 draw in April with a 1-0 victory in mid-October.

And in the 2024 season, St Pat’s went unbeaten at Tallaght Stadium, earning a 2-2 draw and also recording a 3-0 victory.

So the recent head-to-head record makes this a tough match to call, even more so when you remember that this is Shamrock’s first game of the new season.

St Pat’s got their campaign up and running on February 8, though could only muster a 0-0 draw at Bohemians.

Their scheduled match against Galway United last weekend was also cancelled due to inclement weather, meaning both squads may be a little rusty at kick-off.

*All odds are subject to change

Shamrock are the clear favourites for the win, though the reigning champions are priced slightly higher than evens at 2.15 – which is a tad surprising. A victory for St Pat’s is at odds of 3.20, while the draw is 2.92.

Shamrock Rovers vs St Patrick’s Athletic Betting Tips

Anytime goalscorer double chance – Aaron Greene or Graham Burke @ 1.88

Shamrock will look towards two of their experienced forwards to try and break the deadlock in this intriguing fixture. Burke tallied eight league goals last season, while Greene finished with six – averaging one every 187 minutes of action, a pretty good record. So wagering on one of them to score looks a pretty good bet.

Both teams to score – No @ 1.73

But while we are backing a goalscorer bet, we still believe firmly in this BTTS selection. The last three editions of this derby at Tallaght Stadium have seen only one team get on the scoresheet, a trend which is hard to ignore. And the fact St Pat’s could only muster a 0-0 draw in their season opener at Bohemians only enhances the appeal here.
