13:25: West Wind Blows – WIN (5/1)
If there is ever a time to take on Kalpana, it could be this weekend on her seasonal re-appearance. She has been off the track for 210 days and will no doubt have bigger targets down the line; therefore, this could turn into a race purely for fitness. It looks similar to when she was beat at Kempton before going to the Arc, so I can see the case for taking her on. West Wind Blows enjoyed a fruitful time at the beginning of the year at Meydan and Abu Dhabi, and if we blame very soft ground for her latest defeat at Longchamp, she could bounce back and cause an upset here.
14:35: Notable Speech – WIN (5/1)
The classiest horse in this field is Notable Speech and while many of his rivals bring star potential, the Godolphin horse has proven group 1 form on his CV. He has been the victim of some poor rides in his career and should have more accolades to his name. Notably you think of his latest fourth at Keeneland and his second in the Prix Jacques le Marois. The obvious concern, and it is a big concern, is the Charlie Appleby yard appears badly out of form. At the time of writing he is 0/19 in the last 14 days, and while it is normal for yards to dip in and out of form, many of these losses are with well-fancied favourites, so it is quite alarming.
15:10: Royal Fixation – WIN (9/4)
Royal Fixation has changed ownership and moved from Ed Walker to the Karl Burke team, and makes her seasonal debut this weekend in the Listed Carnavon Stakes. She looked a filly going places last year, winning the Group 2 Lowther Stakes and going on to finish third in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes when last seen. Whilst race fitness is not guaranteed, she must be taken seriously with this body of work behind her. She receives the fillies allowance on rivals such as Wise Approach and Albert Einstein, and that tilts the chances strongly in her favour.
15:45: My Love Is King – WIN (3/1)
The form of My Love Is King’s second at Newbury on his penultimate start received a handsome form boost when the winner, Maltese Cross, bolted up last weekend in listed action. You could have thrown a blanket over four of them that day in what was a very competitive finish, and since then he has come out and ran well when finishing runner-up at Newmarket, showing there is substance to the form. First-time cheek pieces go on and if this squeezes out a bit more improvement, then he could take a bit of beating for John and Thady Gosden.
